Many non-binary people wish to appear androgynous and adopt unisex names, gender-neutral titles such as Mx.

and/or gender-neutral pronouns, but others prefer to express themselves in ways which are traditionally seen as masculine or feminine or to mix aspects of the two.

Non-binary people can have any sexual orientation, although if attracted primarily to a single gender they may prefer to use gender-terminology to express this, such as androsexual or gynosexual.

We talk to three young genderqueer or nonbinary people -- they do not identify entirely with either gender -- to hear their stories in the second part of our "I am" series, profiling people whose lives have aspects that intersect with the news.

Genderqueer and gender non-conforming individuals often face rejection and even criticism for the way they look or behave.

Here’s an example of what people say as a justification of their bias: ‘I’m gay and I want to date a guy who looks and acts like a guy, not a guy who’s like a girl.’ It is unfortunate that the idea of gender as binary is so ingrained in certain people and that they are unable to open their mind to people who don’t exactly conform to their standards and expectations of performed gender.

Some public institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York have responded by offering all-gender bathrooms, but trans people say unless all bathrooms in a building are unisex, a single unisex bathroom is a form of segregation and can have the effect of “outing” students trying not to call attention to their gender.
